VERY LOW SERIAL NUMBER 1894 .38-55 ROUND BARREL RIFLE, #19XXX, MADE 1897
Description: VERY LOW SERIAL NUMBER 1894 .38-55 ROUND BARREL RIFLE, #19XXX, MADE 1897. A little "helping" would go a long way on this one. It has a fine+ bore that is only a little dark with good rifling all the way through. The receiver shows some good blue on 1/3 to 1/2 of the sides with the balance mixing brown and gray and the barrel shows very thinning blue to mostly gray with a 2 1/2 in area of rust pitting on the right side of the barrel just ahead of the forearm. All markings are good and it has the original Winchester buckhorn rear sight with the standard Winchester blade front sight. Forend is fine+ with only some handling marks. The butt stock has 3 1/2" by 1/4" sliver out at the right lower tang/receiver juncture. The receiver. is cracked on each side of the hammer- worse on the left side than right side. Action is tight, screws are generally excellent. The rifle functions fine as is, but there are gunsmiths who could work wonders with this early 1894 with a decent bore!
