*Sale Pending* - WINCHESTER MODEL 1894 RIFLE THAT WAS LESTER SCOTT'S OF THE PHANTOM VALLEY RANCH IN 30 WCF
Description:
26 inch octagon barrel chambered in 30 WCF caliber with full length mag tube and crescent butt. Very good bore. Sights include German silver blade front and a platinum band 3 leaf Express rear. Barrel is a gray with blue coming through color while the mag tube is a thinning blue. Receiver is a gray patina with traces of original blue in protected areas. Hammer, lever and butt plate look about the same as the frame. The walnut stock shows a flower on the right side wrist area and a horse head on the left side. The left side of the forearm says "L. ALLEN SCOTT" and "PHANTOM VALLEY RANCH" below that. Wood shows the usual handling mars and dings of an honest used Winchester rifle.
Lester Allen Scott bought the "Hotel de Hardscrable" Camp Wheeler from it's founder in 1926 and named it the Phantom Valley Ranch. It was a 160 acre ranch on both sides of the Colorado River and was a pretty big operation for many years. Teddy Roosevelt stayed there in 1905 while hunting. It's founder Bob Wheeler had served with Roosevelt's Rough Riders during the Spanish-American war. Lester Scott improved and enlarged the lodge and changed the name to "Phantom Valley Ranch. Also added 15 cabins to handle 60 guests and 40 horses. Lots of entertainment was added and trail rides too. This would be an interesting study to learn more of the history associated with Lester and his ranch. An affordable historical Winchester.
