Extremely Rare Winchester Model 1894 Saddle ring Carbine “Spruce Gun”. As the United States was entering World War I timber from the Northwest U.S., especially spruce, was in high demand and critical to the war effort. Spruce was used in the production of aircraft by U.S. manufacturers as well as our allies. There were problems with the mill workers and mill owners which resulted in the U.S. Military establishing the Spruce Production Division within the Signal Corp with the responsibility of cutting the timber and protecting the lumber mills. The Spruce Division also provided security for the mills and as part of providing firearms for security personnel, the U.S. Military purchased 1800 Model 1894 .30 WCF Saddle Ring Carbines from Winchester. These 1800 Model 1894 carbines were marked “U.S.” with a “Flaming Bomb” proof mark on the top front of the receiver.
The Winchester Model 1894 .30 WCF saddle ring carbine we are offering is one those 1800. Bert Hartman, the present historian of the Winchester Arms Collectors Association, is the keeper of the list of authentic “Spruce Guns” that have turned up to date. After providing photos and details of this Carbine (serial number 844694) Mr. Hartman stated this is the 290th known Spruce Gun as of March 15, 2025 and it was added to his list. The date of manufacture was 14 March 1917.
This Winchester Model 1894 Spruce Gun is an honest un-molested example retaining about 30% of its original blue finish; the balance of which has turned to an even gray patina. The butt stock and fore arm appear to have their original finish along with numerous dents and digs and signs of use/handling. Functions as it should. Bore has good-very good rifling.
