1895 .405 WCF CALIBER WITH SPECIAL ORDER LONG LYMAN RECEIVER SIGHT AND SHOTGUN BUTT, #421XXX, MADE 1925.
Description: 1895 IN DESIRABLE .405 WCF CALIBER WITH SPECIAL ORDER LONG LYMAN RECEIVER SIGHT AND SHOTGUN BUTT, #421XXX, MADE 1925. This is a fine example that has seen normal light use and no abuse. The barrel retains most of the deep factory blue and excellent markings. The front sight is a Lyman "Jack" sight which is a half-moon with an ivory bead. The rear sight dovetail has a blank filler which would be correct for a rifle with a receiver sight. The Lyman 21 receiver sight is complete and retains the small forward-folding aperture etc. The receiver shows good aged blue overall with some light brown mixing and fine deep blue on the bolt. The forend is fine with tight wood to metal fit with a few shallow dings on the bottom and retains the correct ebony wedge inlay in the schnable tip. The butt stock has a smooth steel shotgun butt plate and shows only light handling with tight wood to metal fit (the dark stain on the left side is from dissolved powder fouling that dripped back from the bore from a wet cleaning). The standard butt stock configuration for this model in all calibers was a deeply curved crescent. In most calibers this was not a problem, but for a heavy recoiling caliber like the .405 could be brutal! Obviously, the sportsman who ordered this Winchester nearly a hundred years ago knew what he was about and had a shotgun butt put on this fine rifle. The Lyman sight ("Climbin' Lyman Sight") was also a big aid in accurate shooting. Tight action, strong springs and a sharp minty-bright bore. Teddy Roosevelt's 1909 "Lion Medicine" 1909 safari rifle in .405 was similar to this one.
