1895 IN SCARCE .38-72 CALIBER, #63XXX, MADE 1908. The standard caliber for the M-1895 was .30-40 Krag. The .38-72 and .40-72 chamberings were for shooters who thought smokeless powder was “just a passing fad.” They were discontinued early on in favor of the smokeless chamberings like .35 WCF, .303 Brit. And .405 WCF. This one shows good receiver blue with age and wear in the more exposed areas and edges. Exc. markings and screw heads, exc. blue on the bolt. The correct 26” length barrel shows aged blue mixing plum/brown and  is fitted with a standard buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar and small Winchester blade front sight. Stock and forearm show only the lightest of handling with tight wood to metal fit. The forearm retains the ebony wedge in the tip. Action is tight and half-cock holds correctly. When I got this one the bore was so heavily fouled the rifling was barely visible. I ran a brass brush through a number of times followed with patches- all came out full of black crud, but NO brown rust. The bore should clean up better with a lot more brushing etc. Not going to be perfect but should be okay. A scarce caliber 118-year-old 1895 with a very attractive appearance. Comes with a Winchester letter stating the serial number was applied March 10, 1908.
