FINE CONDITION 1895 RIFLE IN SCARCE ".30 U.S. MOD. 1903" CALIBER, #80XXX, MADE 1912
Description: FINE CONDITION 1895 RIFLE IN SCARCE ".30 U.S. MOD. 1903" CALIBER, #80XXX, MADE 1912. The .30-03 caliber was the predecessor of the .30-06 and differed only in that it had a slightly longer neck and typically was factory loaded with a heavy round nose bullet. It was/is common to fire these rifles with .30-06 ammo as the cartridge head-spaces on the shoulder and the slightly longer neck length is unimportant. I believe these .30-03 chambered 1895s were meant so people could use surplus .30-03 or .30-06 ammo. This example has the correct stout 24" round barrel standard for this chambering. The barrel shows fine deep blue overall and is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and a small blade front sight with 1902 patent markings. The receiver shows fine blue on the magazine and upper portions of the lever with the balance of the receiver sides showing good blue with brown mixing on the edges. All markings are clear and there are no extra holes drilled in the receiver side. The stock and forearm show normal handling with tight wood to metal fit. The forend retains the ebony wedge in the tip. The action is crisp and the bore is bright and excellent. Nice, 110 year old 1895 in a scarce caliber.
