Description:
SCARCE 1895 TAKEDOWN RIFLE IN .30-06 CALIBER, #70XXX MADE THE FIRST YEAR WINCHESTER CATALOGUED THE TAKEDOWN FEATURE IN 1910. This example has the standard 24' barrel and also has a shotgun butt stock with checkered steel butt plate. The barrel retains most of the original blue that has dulled sllightly from age only. The receiver has naturally aged to a soft brown with some light blue remaining in the protected areas and on the bolt. Sharp correct markings on the barrel, receiver side and upper tang. Fine wood shows very light handling only with a small beginning of a "sliver crack" at the extreme top of the receiver/tang juncture on the right side- minor. Flattop buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and Lyman ivory bead front sight. Tight action, solid safety half-cock on the hammer and fine bore that is a little dark, but with sharp rifling all the way through. It is thought that only about 10% of 1895s were made in takedown. This has to be one of the first.
