VERY FINE CONDITION 1895 RIFLE IN SCARCE .38-72 CALIBER, #42XXX, MADE 1903
Description: VERY FINE CONDITION 1895 RIFLE IN SCARCE .38-72 CALIBER, #42XXX, MADE 1903. The .38-72 and .40-72 were black powder hold-over calibers in the Model 1895, even though they were eventually loaded with smokeless powder. From the beginning, the .30 Army (same as .30-40 Krag) was the standard caliber for this model with all other calibers much more scarce. The example with correct 26" round barrel retains most of the barrel blue which is only lightly dulling from age. the barrel caliber marking is excellent (".38-72 WCF") and all the receiver markings are also sharp as is the tang marking. The right side of the receiver shows good thinning blue overall with edge wear and deeper blue in the protected areas. The left side of the receiver shows thinning blue to gray on the upper half with better blue on the bottom half. good blue on the bolt with some thinning. Excellent screws, standard buckhorn rear sight with Lyman marked blade/bead front sight. Generally excellent wood overall showing only normal light handling. The forend retains the original ebony wedge inlay in the schnable tip. Tight action and about excellent fairly bright bore (unusual for this caliber!). Nice 117 year old 1895 in one of the most desirable calibers. SOLD Rifle Caliber: .38-72 Winchester Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1895 Serial Number: 42XXX Barrel Length: 26 Condition: FINE+ |
