Winchester US 30, .30-40 Krag - MODEL 1895, FULL TURNBULL RESTORATION, WOW! vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Winchester, Year 1900, .30-40 Krag, 8lb 13oz, LOP 12 13/16" Serial Number: 29390 Presented for your pleasure is this stunning Turnbull restoration - a true labor of love and no expense spared - Winchester 1895. The last of the lever actions to be designed by John Browning, the Model 1895 was the first Winchester to use a box magazine located beneath the action instead of the more common tube magazine making it safe to use the modern Spitzer type bullets. At the time of its introduction, the 1895 was considered the strongest of the lever actions and well capable of handling the heaviest military and hunting rounds of the day. On its introduction in 1886, it was chambered for just three calibers, .30-40 Krag being one of them. Just over four hundred thousand Model 1895 of various calibers and styles where produced with manufacturing ending in 1940. This example is the result of taking a deluxe Winchester 1895 with a factory fitted Lyman peep sight and investing over $7200 worth of restorations to get the gun to looking like an exposition showpiece. A stunning display of craftsmanship from its case colored hammer, flawless re-bluing to its highly figured walnut furniture - the perfect mating of all wood to metal surfaces. To top if off, Vintage Firearms Inc has added hand-checkering in Winchester's Deluxe Grade H pattern, itself a full day of work for our gifted stock maker. Chambered in .30-40 Krag, the barrel exhibits bright sharp rifling and while some frosting is evident in the grooves, the bore is overall in excellent condition. All internal parts have been hand polished during the Turnbull restoration process and the gun operates with a slick action with a trigger tuned to a crisply breaking 3.5lb with no grit, take-up or overtravel. It's just perfect! This rifle has a Cody letter stating that the gun was shipped from Winchester's warehouse on January 22, 1901 - exactly 121 years ago from today as I write this listing! Coincidence or just cool? Overall an impeccably restored rifle from a past age, and a centerpiece for any collection, exquisite.
