Winchester Model 1906 Pump-action Rifle .22 S/L/LR
Description: The Model 1906 was introduced by Winchester as a lower-cost alternative to the Model 1890. It used the same receiver but was fitted with a 20” round barrel and plain gumwood straight grip stock. When first introduced, the Model 1906 sold for two-thirds the price of the 1890. Strangely, for the first two years, the 1906 was only available in .22 Short. In 1908, Winchester came to their senses and modified the rifle to shoot .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle. This ensured its ultimate success and between 1906 and 1932, 731,862 rifles were built. However, many left over parts allowed Winchester to continue building the rifle after 1932. Supposedly, some rifles were still being assembled as late as 1936/1937, while some sources state Winchester produced the 1906 on an as-needed basis until 1942 when the factory switched over to military production. To make matters more confusing, Winchester skipped whole blocks of serial numbers. As a result, serial numbers as high as 847,997 have been seen. Sadly, most serial number lists available in books or online only go from 1906 to 1932, making precise dating of later guns all but impossible to determine. Some records can go as high as 1935 with the last serial number there being 729,305. Since the rifle here as serial number 787,144, it is safe to assume it was built after 1935. It is in good shape for its age. The finish is a charcoal-color blue that turned into a nice patina in places. There are two small spots of pitting on the left side of the receiver, one between the sidewall and the receiver bridge, and the second at the lower, rear side just above the takedown screw. There is a very light spot of pitting on the right lower side of the receiver. Finally, there are three, much smaller spots, one on the left side just below the curve of the receiver top, and two on the tip edge of the lower front face of the receiver. These last two are so small you practically need a magnifying glass to see them. Finally, there is some micro pitting on the top of the rear sight. The rest of the rifle is in excellent shape with respect to the condition of the metal, and even the pitting previously mentioned is rather minor. My own 1906 has pitting over most of its surface (it was found that way), so by comparison this rifle is in fantastic shape for its age. Fortunately, for both mine and this rifle, the bore is extremely good condition. There is no rust or pitting in the bore and it looks like it the factory yesterday. This rifle should be very accurate. It would also make a make nice collector’s piece.
