WINCHESTER MODEL 52 Sporter
Description: The 52 Sporter is one of Winchesters two finest bolt actions with a first class design and fine construction (the other is the Model 70). The 52 has been called the King of the .22 rimfire. The Model 52 Pre A Sporter in question is very likely a conversion from a target model. It is in excellent shape because it was not used very much. I’m guessing that the gunsmith used a 1931 Model 52 Target receiver with Speedlock and converted it into a Sporter by replacing the barrel and stock with a Model 52B barrel stamped “41” and a 52B stock. So I estimate that this conversion must have taken place in the 1940s (again a guess on my part). He had to cut a notch on the stock’s left side for the 52 wing safety. Don’t worry about the balky wing safety, just leave the bolt open for safety. He did a very fine job refinishing it, even the stock which he hand rubbed with linseed oil leaving the original finish intact. The stock has quick disconnect swivels, but this one does not come with a leather strap. As can be seen from the photos the stock is in excellent shape with barely any small scratches or marks. The rifle bore is shiny and bright and the barrel is drilled and tapped for a scope mount. The rest of the rifle has 98% blue. The Sporter stock and barrel are no longer available so they alone are worth a lot. The trigger is as good as the day it was new. As in the target model the Sporter was made for accurate shooting. The rest of the gun including the receiver assembly has all the qualities and accuracy of the target model. I have not used this gun for many years. The absence of “SPORTING” stamp on the trigger guard may be another indicator of the conversion, but I’m not sure because it’s possible the Pre A Sporters did not come with that stamp. So here’s a gun you can buy at a reasonable price and use without being concerned about collector value. I’ve seen many 52s which owners claim to be original and near perfect, but are really refinished rifles.
