Winchester Model 53 .44WCF (.44-40) – 1926, 22” BARREL, 9.5/10 BORE, vintage firearms

Description:
General Specs: Winchester, 1926, .44-40, 6lbs. 1oz., LOP 13 1/16"
Serial Number:  6394

The Winchester Model 1892 is John Browning’s design that closely mirrored the venerable 1886 action but for the smaller handgun calibers that were made popular by Winchester.  Initially made in.32 W.C.F (.32-20), .38 W.C.F. (.38-40), and .44 W.C.F (.44-40).  Winchester also added the .25 W.C.F. (.25-20) to the Model 1892 line. The standard caliber was .25-20, however, the most desirable caliber was the .44-40 which carried the stopping power needed in those dangerous moments. It was a big deal in those times to be able to carry a sidearm and long gun in the same caliber so ammunition would be universal. In 1924, Winchester introduced the Model 53, a modernized version of the Model 1892 rifle. This example, serial number 6394, produced in 1926 by Winchester features a half-length magazine tube, and shotgun buttplate. Moreover, it’s chambered in .44-40, a round that Colt’s SAA revolver is also chambered for. This gun is in excellent, factory original condition with a 22” barrel with sharp crisp rifling, and a bore that rates a superb, almost perfect 9.5/ 10! Most riflemen know that on an older rifle, the condition of the bore is what makes one rifle worth buying and another not worth having.  Excellent bores shoot well. It is becoming more difficult to find a Model 1892 or a Model 53 with much of the original factory finish remaining, this rifle has not been tampered with in anyway, retaining Winchester factory finishes on all metal and wood.  The barrel and magazine tube retain 99% factory blue; the lever and hammer retain 90% factory case color and the receiver 50% bluing. Of note is the flaky bluing on the receiver, this is a usual hallmark of Winchesters produced in this period. Happily, no owner of this gun has ever seen fit to re-finish the bluing, the gun is righteous even with its flaws! This Model 53’s furniture features very well-figured wood which is factory original with no cracks and retains nearly all original factory varnish. Of the roughly 15,000 Model 53 rifles produced, only about 2,200 were chambered in .44-40! Still a viable rifle to shoot today, and ammunition is readily available. If you have a Colt Single Action Army in .44-40, you’d have an outstanding gunslinger combo too! Have a look at the detailed specifications and pictures below. Thanks for looking!
