Description: EXTREMELY RARE MODEL 55 TAKEDOWN .30WCF WITH STAINLESS STEEL BARREL, #11XXX, MADE 1929. Winchester introduced Stainless Steel barrels in 1926 and offered them as a special order item. Demand was so limited that in 1930, right after the stock market crash of 1929 when this rifle was built and the beginning of the Great Depression, Winchester discontinued Stainless Steel barrels and informed their sales reps to announce that Winchester was selling firearms with stainless barrels "at bargain prices! (!) So, today, this means any of these rare guns are difficult to locate. Since Stainless Steel barrels wouldn't take the blue finish of the day, the factory put from one to four coats of black japanned finish on these barrels. This paint-like finish scraped and wore off easily and most users simply removed this japanned finish which left the barrel a bright to dull gray. This example has such a barrel. It is fitted with standard flat top buckhorn and blade sights and is clearly marked "STAINLESS STEEL" on the barrel side. Typical of this vintage rifle, the receiver blue has aged and flaked to an uncleaned gray/brown with fine blue on the loading gate and excellent screw heads. There is a small amount of blue in the most protected areas. Wood is generally excellent showing very light handling only and tight wood to metal fit. It retains the original steel butt plate. Action and takedown are tight and the bore is perfect. A very scarce variation on any model Winchester.
