The 1979 Winchester Model 70 XTR in 7mm Rem Mag is a highly regarded, classic hunting rifle. It features the post-1964 push-feed action, an elegant high-gloss blued finish, and checkered walnut furniture. Its renowned cartridge provides excellent long-range ballistics, though it brings noticeable recoil and muzzle blast. 

Design & Mechanics

• Action: This era utilizes the post-1964 push-feed mechanism. While traditionalists often prefer the earlier controlled-round feed, the late-70s push-feed is incredibly smooth and reliable, rarely causing jams. 
• Safety: Features a classic, easily manipulated three-position wing safety (Safe, Lock/Load, Fire). 
• Caliber (7mm Rem Mag): Known for its flat trajectory and high energy, making it an excellent all-around choice for elk, mule deer, and other large North American game. 

Performance & Usability
The late 70s and 80s Winchester models generally agree that this rifle is highly accurate, often capable of sub-MOA groupings with the right handloads or premium factory ammunition. Because the 7mm Rem Mag is a magnum caliber, the rifle typically comes with a longer barrel (usually 24 or 26 inches) to maximize powder burn and velocity.
