Winchester Model 70 Rare .225 Winchester 24” with Redfield scope, sling
Description: The Model 70 is considered by many gun enthusiasts to be finest bolt action rifle ever made in the U.S. It has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting and has even seen military service as a sniper rifle alongside such famous rifles as the Springfield M1903A4, Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I(T), Mosin-Nagant M1891/30 Sniper, and Mauser Model 98k Sniper. Like the Springfield ’03, the Model 70 traces its lineage back to the original Mauser Model 1898, whose action design formed the basis of the Model 70’s predecessors, the Model 1917 and the Model 54. The .225 Winchester was officially introduced by Winchester in 1964 essentially to replace the .220 Swift in Winchester’s lineup of cartridges chambered in the Model 70. It was based on the .219 Zipper case with a reduced rim diameter to fit the standard .473” bolt face. The .225 is a fine ultra-high-velocity varmint round being able to propel a 40-grain bullet to a little over 4000 fps. Although certainly suited for the job for which it was intended, the .225 Winchester lost out to the .22-250 Remington introduced in 1965, a commercialized version of an already popular wildcat. This Model 70 is in good shape for its age (56 years old, 1966-2020). The rifle has obviously been used as a hunting rifle, i.e. for its intended purpose, rather than sitting in a safe most of its time. There is some light bluing loss on the barrel as well as a few pockets of pitting. There is a slight wear of the finish on the magazine floor plate. The serial number was not properly stamped into the receiver but can still be read correctly. The stock bears most of the wear. The worst spot is at the bottom edge of the butt stock but it is very small. There is a small bur in the wood located on the right underside edge of the forearm. The stock does have one small crack on the left hand side near were the barrel joins the receiver. There are a few dents in the wood which could be steamed out. The bore is in good condition with a minute amount of pitting near the muzzle. It should not affect accuracy given the speed and heavy construction of ultra-high-velocity .22-caliber rifle rounds. The rifle is fitted with an old Redfield 12x40mm scope as well as a leather sling. There are 5 boxes of Winchester .225 Win ammo available with a total of 92 rounds (4 full boxes and one partial). These are available for an extra $85 ($50 for all 5 plus $35 for shipping). These shipping fee for the boxes of ammo is due to the requirement by federal law that ammo be shipped separately from firearms.
