Early Pre War Winchester Model 70 22 Hornet 1937!
Description: This is a very nice shooter grade Pre War Winchester 70 in scarce .22 Hornet, from the first official production year 1937! 4 digit S/N 7811 with matching scribed bolt. Condition is very good showing a strong 90% to 95% on both wood and metal finishes over most, with bottom metal showing more wear. This rifle has been priced as a shooter grade due to having 2 non original 6-48 drill holes for a Weaver type scope base on top of the rear receiver bridge. (The 2 holes in front receiver ring are original as on all Model 70s). There is also a Lyman 48 WJS receiver sight (matching component #s) which was an available option on early 70s, but this is a bit later style with the scalloped base which came out in 1947. All such sights of this vintage, despite being supposedly redesigned for wood clearance, still had the elevation screw dig deeply into the wood. Winchester inletted the stock with a small flat bottomed dibit for this issue on post war rifles with factory installed Lyman 48s. Most however, are just an ugly hole or hideous repair that I've seen 1000 times when installed aftermarket by amateurs. This rifle does show a small inlay repair to this area that does not go through to inner wall. The work is decent and mostly hidden by the sight. Other than the slight gliches mentioned, this is a really nice and solid rifle that presents well in hand. The mechanics are typical Pre War, being butter smooth and proper as usual, the bore is excellent, and the chamber has never been altered to K hornet nor any other caliber. It should make someone a fantastic shooter without paying the premium price tag of so many other collector grades that I have sold. SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes |
