Guns International #: 103663638
Pre 64 Winchester Model 70 .338 Win. Mag.

Description:
Outstanding example of this less common 338 Winchester magnum chambering.
SN 488337 with matching scribed bolt made in 1960.
98% original bright finishes on both metal and wood with only scattered and very minor handling marks.
25" barrel with an excellent bore. All mechanical functions are smooth and crisp as well.
A beautiful and solid rifle in all regards.
I have had numerous questions in the past about these somewhat unique 338s, so will address some of those:
  • ALL 338s were factory issued with soft rubber recoil pads, usually the solid version such as on this rifle, with the latest examples having a ventilated pad.
  • ALL 338s had a "458" stamp on the bottom side of recoil lug. So did every other short magnum. (264, 300 win., .338, .458) The reason for this was that every pre 64 Model 70 used the exact same receiver with only minor milling changes performed for the magnums. The 300 and 375 H&H magnums were easy to identify during assembly since they had obvious routed areas on top for the much longer cartridges. However, the short magnums looked identical to every other M70 receiver with exception of wider bottom guide rails for the fatter shells, so Winchester assemblers needed a quick way to identify them. Hence the "458" stamp.
  • Many or perhaps even most 338s that have been shot much will be cracked in the wrist immediately behind the receiver tang due to their snappy recoil and relative light weight. I have zoomed in on this area to affirm that there is no hint of that on this rifle.
Only around 9500 338s were made, representing well under 2% of total production, so it is not easy to find a good one.
This is a very fine example that would be difficult to improve upon.
