Scarce Winchester Transitional Model 70 Rifle 257 Roberts Unertl Scope
Description: Serial #70397, .257 Roberts, 24 inch barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This rifle was one of the 25,000 or so Model 70s manufactured between 1947-1948, incorporating a mix of pre and post-war features intended to make the Model 70 more amenable to telescopic sights. The metal retains 97-98% of the original blue finish, with some mild silvering and fading along some of the high and exposed edges, as well as on the bearing surfaces of the matching numbered bolt. This rifle has the Type II receiver with redesigned bridge adapted for scope mounts, and the early Type II safety and bolt with narrow safety tab and handle cut-out. The rifle retains its original front sight and hood, and also has a Unertl 10x sporting scope with clear optics and intact crosshair reticle installed (the forward scope block is mounted in place of the original rear sight). The walnut stock has scattered minor handling marks and small surface blemishes marring the original varnish, and the checkering points are still quite sharp with little flattening evident. According to Roger Rule, these Type II rifles were only made for about a year (between serial numbers 60500 - approx. 87700) before Winchester switched to the simplified Type III action that would remain in use until 1964. This is an un-messed with example of a top-tier post-war American hunting rifle, is in excellent condition, with a fantastic Unertl sporting scope, and is chambered in a highly desirable cartridge. It would make a splendid addition to any collection. FFL or C&R SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 70 Caliber Info: .257 Roberts Gauge Info: .257 Roberts |
