WINCHESTER MODEL 70, .257 ROBERTS * SUPER GRADE

Description:
 NICE .257 ROBERTS PRE-64 MODEL 70 WINCHESTER. This was the first Model 70 Supergrade rifle that I ever bought. It was made in 1948, just 3 years after the end of World War II. I bought it almost 40 years later in 1987. I was in the Sahara Space Center at the Las Vegas Antique Arms Show and I fell in love with the rifle and the chambering, 257 Roberts. When I bought it, it had an old Weaver 4X scope in Weaver mounts. It also had a ratty old No-Shok recoil pad that was in the early stages of decline. It did have the Super Grade sling swivels and it also retained the original Winchester 22G rear sight. The metal is in excellent condition with minimal wear considering it is 77 years old. The wood is in great shape, having some small scratches and minor blemishes in the original finish.There is a tiny crack or chip in the bottom of the stock next to the middle action screw that has been repaired. It is shown in the last photo. 
When I got the rifle, I took it to the range and it shot beautifully. With factory ammunition, I got 1 1/2" groups that shrunk to under an inch with careful handloading. About 10 years ago, I found a supplier that sold red rubber buttpads that are a faithful reproduction of the original ones that came on the .375 H&H Super Grade. I purchased one and had my gunsmith install it. Other than that, the rifle is original. I have not shot the rifle for many years, although I faithfully run a lightly oiled patch down the bore once a year followed by a dry one. The bore looks perfect. I hope to find a good home for this one, I don't have time to use it anymore and even though I am as old as the rifle, the rifle is as good as it was 40 years ago, while I am not.
