About Us: I have collected interesting firearms for over 50 years. Now I feel that it is time to start selling a few things. All firearms transactions will be handled by a local Gun shop who will follow all firearms laws. All firearms purchased will be shipped by them to your F.F.L. I do my best to price my items fairly. If you see something that you are interested in, and you think that my price is out of line, please make an offer. I don't have much room for negotiation, but I will work with you if I can. I do not have many items to sell. Please keep checking my items and I will try to add regularly to my listings. I hope to find good homes for these items that are special to me. Please read descriptions and terms, I will endeavor to be accurate.
WINCHESTER MODEL 70 BULL GUN Pre '64 in .30 GOV'T 06
Description: WINCHESTER MODEL 70 BULL GUN Pre '64 in .30 GOV'T 06. Winchester Model 70 Bull Guns are very special rifles. Only 2706 of them were produced between 1936 and 1963. That represents only 0.47% of all Model 70s produced Pre '64. Of the 2706, only 844 were produced in 30-06. This one was made in 1955 and has the .30 GOV'T 06 designation. Bull Guns feature the Marksman stock and a 28" extra heavy barrel. Only the Bull Guns had the extra heavy barrels. The Bull Gun was made for long range Match shooting, usually at 1000 yards. They could be ordered with or without sights. This one is equipped with Redfield Olympic Sights. I do not know if they are original to the rifle. The barrel has both a dovetail slot and is drilled and tapped to mount a front sight. I pointed this out to a friend who is an experienced model 70 collector. He explained to me that Bull Guns were discontinued in 1952 but they were brought back in 1954. When they were brought back, open sights were no longer standard but all barrels were drilled and tapped and had bases installed for them. He speculates that there were probably some barrels left over from the previous run that were dovetailed, but the factory drilled and tapped them anyway to accomodate the bases that they had on hand. He told me that he has seen several in the 1954, and 1955 years that were done this way. The receiver has a clip loading slot and is factory drilled for mounting a scope. It also has Unertl type target scope bases installed from the factory at production. Many Bull Guns were used a lot, and many were altered, rechambered, or even rebarreled. There is no way to know how many originals are in existence today. I purchased this rifle at The Crossroads of the West gun show at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah in1979. When I bought it it looked almost brand new, just as it looks today. The tag that was on it that day is still attached. The wood is in great shape with only a couple of small marks. The most noticeable are two between the pistol grip oval and the rear sling mount. The metal is 99% or better. The only wear appears on the bolt knob, even so it still retains most of its bluing. Even though the rifle is 70 years old, the bore looks perfect. I have only shot it a handful of times and have cleaned and oiled it at least once a year while in storage. I have only seen one other Bull Gun in 30-06 for sale. It was at the Las Vegas Antique Arms show and it was priced at $9,000.00. Please look over the pictures carefully, this Model 70 Bull Gun is really nice. Thanks for looking! Buyer pays Insurance and Shipping costs.
