Winchester Model 70 Pre-War 1938 “.30 GOV’T ‘06” w/Weaver scope
Description: This is a very rare piece here. An original, Pre-War Model 70 rifle. Take notice that the stated chambering is “.30 Gov’t ‘06” rather than .30-06. This was the designation used for the famous ’06 round at that time to avoid confusion with the then common .30 Gov’t round, known more commonly today as the .30-40 Krag. Another feature that differentiates this Model 70 from later rifles is the receiver’s “clover leaf” tang. Post-war models featured a uniformly rounded tang to help reduce production times. The receiver and barrel sit within a nice custom stock. There is one aspect that should be mentioned about the stock. The previous owner had purchased the rifle and then had it shipped to his local FFL dealer. Unfortunately, the FFL that shipped it did not make sure the rifle was packaged in a safe manner and the stock was broken in transit, much to the buyer’s dismay. Fortunately, the he had been trained as a gunsmith and so he repaired to stock himself using a steel pin inserted into the stock to help keep it rigid. Having seen many stock repairs over the years I can say that this repair is in my top 5 of those repairs. The stock surface has been expertly smoothed so that the repair can be barely felt or not at all. The repair job is shown in the pictures. The buttpad has dried over time though being a Model 70, replacement pads are easy to find. The rifle has the wing-type safety found on early Model 70s. This was an improvement over the previous Model 54 as the wing safety allowed for easier operation when a scope was mounted on the rifle. The bolt is beautifully jeweled. The scope is a Weaver model K-4 60-C. The rings are also made by Weaver. The bluing on the receiver has a slightly purplish hue which comes as a result of the hot salt bath bluing process used at that time. The bluing on the barrel is in great condition though with a small amount of wear near the muzzle. The muzzle itself features a recessed crown. The rifle’s bore is in excellent condition especially given the rifle’s age of 80 years! The action is still tight even after all these years. If you are a fan of the Model 70 or are looking for high-quality, old-school rifle chambered in .30-06, this rifle would a fine choice. The Model 70 is considered by many gun enthusiasts to be finest bolt action rifle ever made in the U.S. I personally own a pre-64 Model 70 in 300 H&H and can without doubt that it is one of the finest rifles I have ever owned. The Model 70 has been used for everything from hunting to target shooting and has even seen military service as a sniper rifle alongside famous rifles such as the Springfield 1903A4, Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mk I(T), Mosin-Nagant M1891/30 Sniper, and Mauser Model 98k Sniper.
