Winchester Pre-64 Model 70 Super Grade 458 Magnum
Description: This listing is for my Winchester Model 70 Super Grade African Pre-1964 rifle in .458 Winchester Magnum caliber. I bought this rifle in March of 1976 from Shuman’s Gun Shop in Newville, PA. I never hunted with the rifle, only getting it out once a year and firing three or four rounds just to “enjoy” the recoil. I stopped shooting it about 20 years ago when its value started to go up so much and bought another much less expensive 458 to shoot. The rest of the time it has resided in either my gun cabinet or more recently in my gun safe. The rifle is still exactly in the same condition as it was when I bought it. The serial number 4015xx is on the receiver and is etched into the bottom of the bolt body. This should put it in 1957 production. The blued barrel retaining 95%+ of its bluing is in good condition. The muzzle crown is bright. The front swivel base is located and attached to the bottom of the barrel ahead of the stock. The barrel has a hooded front post and the early style adjustable rear V sight. A Weaver K1 scope is mounted on the receiver using the factory tapped holes. The barrel bore is bright. The flat blued receiver is in good condition and is factory tapped. The bolt body, extractor, extractor ring and magazine follower were jeweled from the factory, but someone buffed most of the jeweling off the bolt with only traces remaining. I don’t know if they tried to smooth the action or why they would have buffed it. In his book, Dean Whitaker states that the extractor was sometimes not jeweled on African rifle (page 70). The jewelling remains on the magazine follower. There is some light wear to the bluing of the bolt handle. There is a small area of very fine pitting on the front corner of the magazine follower, barely noticeable. The wood stock is in good condition with a few handling marks and dents, mainly on the left side of the receiver (belt buckle?). The checkering is good. The stock has the 2 visible stock crossbolts covered in Bakelite. The red Winchester recoil pad is good with some wear. It is still pliable and has not hardened or cracked. The rear sight is attached to the barrel with two screws. The front screw is broken off about flush with the top of the barrel. It came to me that way and I did not feel qualified to try to replace it, but it should be an easy fix for a good gunsmith. This rifle has the narrow sling swivel bases, both front and rear, while most of these rifles have wide bases. In his book “ The Model 70 Winchester 1937-1964”, Dean Whitaker states on page 93 that the narrow bases are sometimes found on rifles made in the 1950’s ,but the wide bases are not found on rifles made before 1948. Roger Rule, in his book “The Rifleman’s Rifle”, states on page 172 that there is only one type of Super Grade swivel base and these are ½ inch wide across the eyelet. I bought this rifle before they became a hot collector item, so there would have been little incentive for anyone to “fake” anything about it. One collector suggested that the front swivel had been ground out to the narrow profile, but close examination with a magnifying glass show no evidence of anything other than original factory milling of this part. The sling and super grade swivels that came on the rifle will be included. Only1226 of these rifles were manufactured from 1956-1963. Many went to Africa and stayed there. Many have been re-stocked and otherwise modified, so only a fraction of the 1226 remain in original condition. Due to my age and the fact that no family members are interested in inheriting my guns, I have been slowly selling off my collection, starting with the “safe queens”. I am pricing this one below market price due to the sight screw and buffed bolt. I have lots of photos (60+) but am limited to 15 on this site. If you want a photo of something else, let me know (I may already have it). I only accept USPS Money Orders for firearms (or cash if you want to pick it up at my local dealer’s premises). Shipping will be USPS insured Priority Mail. I will ship in a new padded hard case for $150 which will include a new Boyt H-Series padded hard case ($139.99 at Midway USA). Shipping will be from my FFL dealer to yours once payment and FFL have been received.
