Winchester Model 70 SUPER GRADE, .338, SPECIAL ORDER, vintage firearms inc
Description:
General Specs: Winchester, Year 1960, 338 Win Mag, 8lbs 4oz, LOP 13 1/2"
Serial Number: 488621
Winchester's Model 70 was called the "Rifleman's Rifle" by many in the know, including the shooting editor of Outdoor Life, Jim Carmichael. Known for its accuracy, rugged durability, and overall good looks, the Pre-64 Model 70 has continued to be in high demand and has grown in value yearly. The number of styles, configurations, calibers, and slight design changes make the Model 70 a collector/shooter's dream. Most of the Model 70 rifles produced were Standard rifles. The Super Grade was available to shooters who wanted a deluxe rifle and came with an ebony forend tip, the “Super Grade” marking on the magazine floor plate, jeweled bolt and magazine follower, special stock configurations, etc. Of the over 1/2 million pre-64 Model 70 rifles produced, only 2.73 percent, or about 15,000 were Super Grades. This rifle is technically a Super Grade Alaskan, produced as a SPECIAL-ORDER CLASS 3 rifle chambered in the newly released .338 Winchester Magnum. The Super Grade was never catalogued in .338 Win. Mag. Caliber. The Model 70 was not offered in the .338 Win. Mag until 1959, which was the same year they discontinued the Super Grade (with exception of the African which was offered until 1963). One of the characteristics that makes a Class 3 Special Order is a rifle with catalogued features but chambered in a caliber that was not a catalogued offering, like this rifle, sn488621 built in 1960. All the features are correct for the period, including the curvature of the pistol grip, checkering LPI and pattern, and even the pad was standard on the short magnum rifles. If you have Roger Rule’s book “The Rifleman’s Rifle” you will see a similar Super Grade chambered in the .338 Win. Mag with a later serial number than this one on page 262. It is clear that they made a few Super Grades into 1960 and that shooters of the day would have wanted a Super Grade in the newly released .338 Win Mag, as it is one of the most desirable calibers for large game in North America and beyond. This rifle is in superb factory original condition, with 99% blue on the barrel, bolt handle retains 93% factory blue, jeweling on the bolt and magazine follower is lightly worn, the receiver retains 99% blue with only a hint of a scope mounting, the bottom metal and trigger guard retain 99% factory blue, and the stock has most all of the original finish as well. THIS IS A RARE GUN, AND A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A GREAT PRE-64 MODEL 70 SUPER GRADE in a special-order caliber that you will want to carry after elk, bear, moose, and hogs on this continent. Of course, this is a great mid-caliber for African plains game as well. This is priced to sell, so don’t hesitate or she will be gone! Thanks for looking.
