Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle chambered in .38-40 WCF, made in 1893 in New Haven, Connecticut. Another brilliant creation from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was designed to succeed the legendary and iconic 1873. It kept the same pistol calibers that so many shooters loved, making it a practical choice. The result was a sleek, lightweight rifle that quickly became a favorite and remained in production for nearly 50 years. Many gun enthusiasts appreciated Winchester rifles because they could fire the same ammunition as their pistols. This meant a cowboy, trapper, or stagecoach defender could carry just one type of ammo for both their rifle and sidearm—saving space and hassle in the field.

The Model 1892, like many Winchester rifles, gained extra fame when the TV show “The Rifleman” debuted in 1958, starring Chuck Connors. To make his character stand out, producers came up with a special gimmick. The show featured a modified Winchester Model 1892 with a large ring lever, drilled and tapped for a set screw. This design allowed the character to spin the lever around his hand to cock the rifle—a cool trick that added flair. Plus, the screw could be adjusted to depress the trigger each time he worked the lever, enabling rapid firing—he could empty the magazine in under five seconds during the opening scene. It was a clever touch that made the character’s firearm as memorable as the show itself.
In April 1919, Winchester eliminated the “18” and “19” from the model names of all of the various models that were in active production. So, after this date, the Model 1892 would have been the Model 92.

The overall condition is very good. Dark and gray patinas on the barrel, magazine tube with a bright gray receiver. The bore has dimmed in appearance with serviceable rifling. The action is robust. Stock and forend remain in good condition with expected wear from use. A small sliver of wood is missing where the wrist meets the upper tang on the right side. The markings are worn but remain legible.
