The Winchester 1300 replaced the model 1200 in 1978, incorporating a few improvements over its predecessor but keeping most of the familiar qualities of Winchester's new generation of pump shotguns. The 1300 is famous for its "speed pump," which allowed for faster manual cycling of the action compared to its competitors from Remington and Mossberg. This feature is made possible because of its rotary bolt design—something that was not common yet in shotguns. The bolt unlocks with recoil and begins to start the bolt rearward and can then be cycled with less effort and thus that much faster. This bolt design would later be incorporated into countless other pump shotguns including the modern Winchester Super X Pump (SXP).
