Winchester, Lee Navy, .236 Caliber
Description: This is a factory Winchester Lee Navy Sporter. Not a rfle that was converted from a military issue. You can see what the difference is if you watch the You Tube episode about the Lee Navy sporters on, "Forgotten Weapons" This rifle fits all the Sporter descriptions to a Tee. Serial # is 13596, from the Winchester site it was mfg.in 1900. Different books give different numbers but most state that there were 1700 produced. These sporters could be ordered with several different barrel lenghts. This one has the 24" barrel with the correct factory front and rear sights. Since it is a true Sporter there is no trap door in the metal butt plate. The .236 and U.S.N. stampings are in the correct place and there is no hole or filled hole in the front of the bottom metal that would have been for a sling swivel on the military model. Barrel is marked "Nickel Steel" above "Especially For Smokeless Powder". All the stamping on the left side of the receiver are as sharp as the day it left the factory. The metal is 98%. The Blue is deep and there are no signs of any type of surface rust or "patina" anywhere on the receiver or barrel. The stock has what appears to be it's original finish. Comes with the original horn pistol grip cap. There are some handling marks and what looks like a few safe dings, but no cracks, splits, or deep gouges. You can see in the pictures that it looks like some oil soaking at the rear of the stock at the butt plate. I have no idea how that would happen. You can also see where the wood is not fitted perfectly at the toe of the stock. Again, I can't say how that happened. If they could only talk. The rifling in these guns was the Medford or Polygonal style. The lands are sharp and shiney. The grooves look a little darker but from my research it sounds like that is pretty normal for this rifle. Overall a really great looking Lee Navy Sporter that not too many Winchester fans know about. You would be proud to show this one off at the range. I can send more pictures upon request. Price is plus shipping/Ins to your FFL 3 day NON firing inspection. If returned the buyer pays for shipping/Ins and any FFL fees charged to receive it back. SOLD |
