Winchester Model 1883 Hotchkiss Cavalry Carbine (1st Type)
Description: Serial #15995, .45-70, 24" barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This carbine retains about 50-60% of the original blue finish, with the balance faded to freckled plum-brown. The receiver was lightly cleaned along the left side, which has left a streak of bright gray metal at the rollmarks. The bolt has a mottled brown and gray patina, darker and with some pitting on the handle, and some original blue blue remains on the cocking-piece. The walnut stock is in fine original condition with only a few small handling marks and blemishes scattered about the original oil finish. There are no cracks or breaks at the wrist, unlike most other 1st Model examples, and the saddle ring is still present. While not US marked, this carbine was evidently used by a state militia or police unit, and has a stamped rack number on the right side of the butt: “4". This is a nice 1st Model Winchester Hotchkiss, and rates very good plus overall.
