Circa 1850 Single Barrel British Shotgun
Here we present an antique William Chance Percussion Fowler, made circa 1850 in Birmingham, England. William Chance was a Birmingham gun maker and merchant as early as 1777. His brand went through several name changes depending on his partner at the time, which included his sons. The business seems to have lasted at least through 1858. He sold in Great Britain as well as the United States.
This single shot percussion fowler features a part-octagon, part-round barrel that is marked “WARRANTED FINE TWIST”. The bottom of the barrel bears the Birmingham proof marks. The lock is tastefully engraved and marked “Wm. Chance” in nice script. The trigger guard is also engraved and acts as a pistol grip.
Overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are dark, with legible markings and a faint bit of twist still showing on the barrel. The stock is very nice, with a bit of complexity to the grain ahead of the lock, probably contributing to the sliver that was lost long ago. The bore is smooth and clean. The action is strong. Here is a very nice old English fowler that would be perfect for the duck lodge.
