Here we present an antique J.S. Trowbridge & Co. Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century. J.S. Trowbridge & Company was a hardware store and retailer that operated in the 1850s and 1860s out of Boston, Massachusetts and was noted for importing shotguns, along with many other sporting goods.
It features a half-length stock though it is really quite light and handy compared to many of its American contemporaries. This would have been exported from England to a country like the United States with a thriving market for all sorts of firearms. As people moved West and settled in remote areas, hunting was especially important to put food on the table and for protecting the homestead. This would have been a good gun for fowl hunting.
The overall condition is good. Robust action. Bright smooth bores. There is a ding about a third of the way from the muzzle on the right barrel. “J.S. TROWBRIDGE & Co.” is engraved on both locks and the barrel rib. Solid stock. Nice twist pattern on the barrels. A beautiful percussion shotgun!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrels: 26-1/2 inches.
Caliber: 12 Gauge Percussion
Length of Pull: 14-1/8 inches
Overall condition as seen in photos.
