Double barrel, CHARLES JONES PATENT PERCUSSION, shotgun
Description:
Charles Jones was Gunmaker to H.R.H Prince Albert
VERY UNUSUAL CHARLES JONES PATENT PERCUSSION GAME GUN. SN 116. Cal. 14 Bore. This very scarce, innovative, interesting, and high quality shotgun was patented in 1833…The system underwent some changes in design through its period of manufacture. In MacDonald Hastings book ENGLISH SPORTING GUNS AND ACCESSORIES, shows an earlier example of this gun, SN 59, in which special caps were placed on the nose of the hammers, the caps had detonating composition on the outside. This later gun uses conventional caps. 28″ Beautifully patterned skelp Damascus barrels are engraved “CHARLES JONES’S PATENT. 26, St James’s Street. London.” on raised concave game rib. Bottoms of bbls are stamped with SN and Birmingham proofs. Ebony, brass tipped and tailed, ramrod has worm under cap, and mounts through two plain pipes. Patent breeches have SN on bottoms, and hooks are fitted with specially shaped percussion nipples giving direct central fire to the charge. Breech and lock mechanism is mounted to large trigger plate with internal circular hammers, being actuated by external cocking levers resembling typical percussion hammers. Breech area is closed by sliding cover with large checkered thumbpiece. When in the closed position it can be seen that the area under slide is engraved “Patent” and SN. The sides of the breech have side vents bto allow for escaping gas when firing. Sliding cover, breech tang, and cocking levers are engraved with nicely cut shaded open scroll. Large undecorated area in front of trigger guard bow is engraved “Charles Jones’s” “Patent Waterproof Locks” and “With Concentric Sears and Triggers”. Tang is fitted with scroll engraved grip safety, locking triggers. Somewhat streaked and stump figured European walnut straight grip stock over steel long tang buttplate. Flat top checkering is at 18 LPI with scalloped mullered borders. Bbl mounts to fore piece with key sliding through oval silver escutcheons. CONDITION: Overall very good, Bbls are tight with some freckling from oxidation. Breech area retains perhaps 30% original case color, as do cocking levers, Trigger plate is silvered with some in front of trigger guard bow, Trigger guard has some frosting .. Grip safety is mostly silver. Stock retains most of its original finish..There are a number of small marks and nicks. Locks are crisp. Bores are in good condition, with frosting, and a few minor pits toward muzzles.
