Here we present an antique Side by Side Percussion Shotgun with a 1st TEX CAV Marking, made sometime in the mid-19th Century. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead. It is difficult to say when the “1st TEX CAV” marking what put on the stock, but shotguns were indeed a weapon used by cavalry during the Civil War. There was a small arms shortage for both sides, especially at the beginning of the conflict, and shotguns were employed by infantry and cavalry alike. It would have been pretty handy for cavalry in close quarters to have a shotgun, not to mention the additional shot over a single shot rifle-musket.
The 1st Texas Cavalry may refer to a unit on either side of the conflict. There was a unit by that name that fought for the Union—it was raised November 6, 1862 in New Orleans, Louisiana—and about 6 possibilities on the Confederate side of the coin: 1st Battalion Texas Cavalry (Crump’s), 1st Battalion Texas Cavalry State Troops, 1st Regiment Texas Cavalry (Buchel’s), 1st Regiment Texas Cavalry (McCulloch’s), 1st Regiment Texas Cavalry (Yager’s), and 1st Regiment Texas Cavalry State Troops, all according to the National Parks Service (there may be a couple other candidates but these were the most likely).
This shotgun also features some rudimentary sling swivels and a very old leather sling.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The engraving is still clear. The stock shows an old chip at the toe and some other handling marks from the period of use, all with a patina. The bores are smooth and dark. There is a ding at the muzzle of the right barrel. The actions are excellent. A neat old shotgun!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrels are 31 inches.
Caliber: 16 Gauge
