Very Fine Prelat French Flintlock Double Fowler
20 Gauge
Description: 20 Bore 33 inch Damascus barrels with mostly bright very good bores showing a bit of scattered light pitting and old oxidation. This is a lovely Parisian flintlock double, the barrels toning to a mix of deep gunmetal gray and medium plum-brown patina with areas of old oxidation and subdule damascus patterns. The barrels are of Belgium make and show a Liege proof mark on the left barrel and they are boldly engraved in script with makers information "Prelat / a Paris", also showing some light remnants of light gold washing etched motifs at the breeches. There are platinum blowout plugs and the locks are of the finest quality ornate construction. The lock plates themselves are flat with high beveled edges and pronounced taets which curve slightly inward. The remaining hardware is lovely featuring graceful cocks, silver-linded waterproof pans and bridled roller frizzens, all which feature nice little details, the frizzen springs of particularly fine construction. The right cock shows an old repare with the top half being expertly replaced many years ago.The metal parts are ornately engraved with small game seans and many embellishments. The checkered walnut stock is of similarly ornate constructionand in very fine condition showing a few small chips around the barrel wedge and some lighter small dings. The arm is equiped with sling swivels and includes a brass tipped hickory ramrod. The locks are crisp and function well. Francois Prelat was a royal gunmaker in the early to mid 19th century and the maker of very ornate and flamboyant guns. This fowler is a fine example of his work. SOLD Antique: Yes |
