Thomas Bland London "The Keeper's Gun" 10 Gauge Double Barrel Shotgun EXCELLENT High Condition Breechloader Nickel Frame LIKE NEW! Ca. 1885
Description: Jeremiah Johnson Trading is one of the most experienced dealers of fine antique arms, with over 30 years of collecting. We also specialize in a vast array of collectibles, including western memorabilia, antique cars, Revolutionary and Civil War artifacts, early Bowie and folding knives, period nautical and scrimshaw pieces, unusal artwork, and colonial era furniture. Find us online or on Facebook! HIGH CONDITION Rare Thomas Bland "The Keeper's Gun" Double Barrel Breechloading Shotgun with Nickel Plated Action for Coastal Waterfowling, 10 Ga, mfg. ca. 1885. This is a rare high quality double by one of London's best and longest running makers in phenomenal original condition. Pictures do not do this gun justice! Damascus barrels measure 32" long and feature a brass bead front sight. The top rib is engraved "T. BLAND & SONS. 106 STRAND. LONDON. "THE KEEPER'S GUN" NEW MODEL". Both locks are engraved "T. BLAND & SONS". The barrels retain 95% vivid original Damascus finish with only the very slightest wear at the muzzle and top of the breech. The frame, locks, hammers, top lever, upper & lower tangs, triggerguard & triggers, forearm, and extractor are Nickel plated which was popular at the time for coastal waterfowl guns since Nickel held up better against the harsh salt water elements than bluing or case color. The aforementioned parts show 98% bright original Nickel finish. The stock features a checkered English style straight wrist accompanied by a checkered forestock. The checkering shows little wear and is still very sharp. The wood retains a pleasing original finish with minimal wear or handling mars. There is a 1 1/4" crack 1 1/2" check on the left side of the buttstock forward of the buttplate which likely occurred from hot/cold element changes. They do not detract from the gun and could easily be repaired if desired. There are no additional cracks, chips, or repairs. Original horn buttplate and rubber pad. The pad shows moderate wear and is still relatively pliable. One screw plug is missing. Buttstock is fitted with a solid Silver nameplate which has turned black with age. Original horn forend tip is perfect. Matching serial numbers are stamped on the water table, under the barrels, on the forestock, and engraved on the lower tang. Both actions are crisp and function excellent, and both firing pins move freely. The barrels lock up tighter than a bank vault against the frame. There is NO play whatsoever. The bores are excellent. They are bright and shiny with no rust, frosting, or dings, and only minimal surface scuffing near the breech. A quick cleaning would likely remove any marks. Considering this is an 1880's blackpowder shotgun they are stunning! LOP measures 13 5/8" to rear trigger, 14 1/2" to front trigger. Weight of the gun is just under 9 3/4 lbs. Barrels are proofed for 2 5/8" blackpowder shells. Thomas Bland shotguns are highly sought after and this is by far the finest condition example we have ever owned. A prize addition to any shotgun or antique arms collection! No FFL required on pre-1899 firearms.
