Antique A.W SPIES Single Barrel Percussion SHOTGUN
Description:
Antique A.W SPIES Single Barrel Percussion SHOTGUN
With Engraved Lock and “LONDON” Barrel
Here we present an antique Single Shot Percussion Shotgun by A.W. Spies, made circa the 1850s. This shotgun would have been a nice hunting implement for the marsh, the field or the wood. It features an approximately 14 gauge bore and engraved lock. The trigger guard, barrel tang, and butt plate are also modestly engraved. The trigger guard has a distinct square shape to it. Adam W. Spies was a dealer in New York City, NY in the mid-19th century. The firm was a major retailer for arms and many people headed for the frontier would have acquired their firearms from this company. This one is a trade gun from England, hence the “LONDON” marking. It features a part-octagonal, part-round barrel in .69 caliber. End cap is of pewter. A few initials are carved into the stock below the thumb plate.
The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces are dark with age. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is smooth and dark. The action is strong.
