JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS “R J RUNKEL” PERCUSSION SxS Shotgun by JOHN COLCHER
Mid-to-Late 19th Century Belgian Fowler!
Description: JACKSONVILLE, ILLINOIS “R J RUNKEL” PERCUSSION SxS Shotgun by JOHN COLCHER Mid-to-Late 19th Century Belgian Fowler! Here we present an antique John Colcher Double Barrel Percussion Side by Side Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century in Liege, Belgium. As people moved West and settled in remote areas, hunting was especially important to put food on the table and for protecting the homestead. This would have been a good gun for fowl hunting. These locks were called “back action” because the mainspring hangs behind the tumbler. The back action is often used in double rifles and occasionally in single barrel shotguns where the need for strength requires as little steel as possible be removed from the bar of the action. This lock was popular on percussion guns made in St. Louis, New York, California, Ohio, England and Belgium. Back Action percussion locks were a “late” developed style of lock. Used primarily on the hardware store line of guns, these locks did, however, show up on some better pieces in the mid-to-late 1800’s. This one features a particularly well-grained piece of wood for the stock. “RJ RUNKEL/JACKSONVILLE/JACKSONVILLE.ILL.” is stamped on the ownership placard proudly affixed to the right side of the butt stock. The Runkel family has a long history in Jacksonville. An old brass plate repair can be observed on the underside of the stock around the triggers. The action is strong on both sides. This example has a solid stock. The barrel wedge keyhole has been repaired and remains a bit loose. There is an old repair using screwed in brass plates to support the stock around the triggers. This old double looks like it was used hard and practically and repaired when the need arose. It will make a great accouterment for above the mantle. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels: 32 inches. Caliber: 12 Gauge Percussion Length of Pull: 14-1/8 inches Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
