Ornate GERMANIC Double by GMEINER Rifle & Shotgun Combination .62 Caliber Engraved, Inlaid, and Carved Big Game Double Gun!
Description: Ornate GERMANIC Double by GMEINER Rifle & Shotgun Combination .62 Caliber Engraved, Inlaid, and Carved Big Game Double Gun! Here we present an antique M.A. Gmeiner Side x Side Combination Percussion Rifle & Shotgun, manufactured circa the 1850s in Altenburg, Thuringia, Germany. These were typically high-end hunting weapons that featured a side by side configuration with one barrel rifled and the other smooth. The hunter would use the rifled barrel to fire long range, precise shots against large game and use the smooth could be loaded with a large ball or slug for a quick follow up shot, especially on large and dangerous game, or the smooth bore could be loaded with shot to make it feasible to hunt fowl at the same time without carrying multiple guns. The gun has two triggers to allow either barrel as needed. Cape guns made in Germany and Austria usually have the rifled barrel on the right side (as is this one), while British made cape guns are in most cases reversed. These were supremely handy firearms for the sportsman, though many were used on a much more practical level to put food on the table and provide security for the homestead. This is a very ornate and beautifully executed gun. Inlaid gold script on the barrels, elegant carvings on the stock and trigger guard, brilliantly engraved locks, hammers will captivate. “M.A. GMEINER/IN ALTENBURG” is inlaid with gold on the barrels. There are two small ovals over the breeches with rampant lions, each gold filled. One-piece, carved, ebony trigger guard is a perfect accent to the carved walnut stock. Front sling swivel with a rear button head for a tradition leather sling. This piece looks to have been made originally as a flintlock and was later updated to the percussion firing system. The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The left bore is in good condition and smooth. The right bore is also in good condition with nice rifling. Every last detail is ornate, even the carved jaeger patchbox is inviting. This German beauty is a must have for the big game hunter or for anyone who can enjoy the Old World craftsmanship of a piece such as this! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrels are 25 inches. Caliber: Left is .62 Smoothbore; Right is .62 Rifle Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe.
