Percussion Hammer Shotgun – 16 BORE, BELGIUM BEST, GORGEOUS, ANTIQUE, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Belgium, Year 1850-1870, 16 Gauge, 7lbs 12oz, SxS Hammer, ANTIQUE Serial Number: N/A What a great gun we have found in this Belgium made, high quality percussion hammer gun in 16 gauge, bore diameter of .667, smoothbore. Built sometime in the mid-1800’s, the gun is in remarkable condition and ready for your field forays with a vintage upland gun. I get to see a lot of fine guns in my business, and I am often shown many poor-quality guns as I search for the best. It is easy to know when you are holding something special. This fine smoothbore is one of the special ones. First to be noticed is the ornate shaping, filing, and engraving on the barrels. From the breech up 12” is unique metal working that is quite extraordinary and decorative, requiring the highest of skill levels to achieve. In fact, looking at every aspect of the gunmaker’s art, this gun is at the highest level. The finely figured French walnut stock is fit to the action to perfection, the checkering is still the original flat-top checkering and barely worn. The stepped, back-action lock plates are engraved with great detail and skill. The hammers are gracefully shaped, engraved, and the fences are shaped in a way to prevent flashback to the shooter’s eyes. The action is mechanically excellent, with strong hammer springs, crisp triggers, and perfect original engraved screws. Even the ebony loading rod is original to the gun. The steel buttplate with the long tang extending onto the top of the comb is also nicely engraved. The stock dimensions are modern and eminently shootable (see below) and there are no cracks or repairs to the stock. The 31 ½” barrels have smooth bores, but I have not disassembled the breech block to inspect. The barrels come off the gun with the removal of one pin, and they are firmly put back in place just as easily. This is a high-end gun, not a cheapy, and is quite the rare find in this condition. How fun this would be to load up with black powder, or smokeless black powder substitute, and take it for a run around the sporting clays course or to the field after upland birds! This gun is priced to sell, so don’t hesitate. You will not be disappointed when you open the box. Of course, being an antique, made around 1850-1870, we can ship it to any address you choose.
