Description: PITTSBURGH, PA Antique J.H. JOHNSTON 8 Gauge Percussion Shotgun “GREAT WESTERN GUN WORKS” Family of Guns Here we present an antique J.H. Johnston Half Stock Percussion Side by Side Shotgun, made circa the mid-19th Century in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. John H. Johnston was a gunsmith in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania who was born in 1811 and died in 1889. James H. Johnston was the son of John and the owner of the Great Western Gun Works, which was established in 1865 and produced rifles, shotguns, and combination guns. The shop was located at 621 Smithfield Street in Pittsburgh. He was born in 1836 and died in 1919. This gun would have been a staple hanging over the fireplace used to take game of all sized or to defend the homestead against unwanted aggression. The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. Both actions are functional. The bores are smooth and dim. Stock shows use with some chipping here and there. It remains solid throughout. Own the original!
