SAINT LOUIS, MO J.P. GEMMER Antique Double Barrel PERCUSSION Shotgun
CIVIL WAR Era / FUR TRADE SIDE x SIDE Fowling Piece
Description: SAINT LOUIS, MO J.P. GEMMER Antique Double Barrel PERCUSSION Shotgun CIVIL WAR Era / FUR TRADE SIDE x SIDE Fowling Piece Here we present an antique Engraved J.P. Gemmer Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made circa the 1860s in Saint Louis, Missouri. J.P. Gemmer (1838-1919) is a name that will always be associated with the fur trade and the old West. Johann “John” Phillip Gemmer was born on June 21, 1839, in Lollschied, Germany. In 1855, at the age of 16, John and his father traveled to the United States by sailing ship. They landed in New Orleans and traveled up the Mississippi by steamboat in route to St. Louis, Missouri. They settled about 150 miles west of Saint Louis in Boonville, Missouri, where John began learning the trade of gun making. In 1859 he returned to St. Louis and began working at the gun shop of Emanual Kleinhen. After about a year he took a position in the well-known “Hawken Shop”, which was founded in 1822 by the Hawken brothers. The Hawken name was famous throughout the west for providing rifles for trappers, frontiersmen, and mountaineers. During the Civil War, John was employed for a time by the U.S. Government at the Arsenal in St. Louis, attaining the rank of Corporal in the Arsenal Battalion. J.P. Gemmer took ownership of the “Hawken Shop” from then-owner William L. Watts circa 1866 and sold guns under his own name. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead. This was truly the kind of gun that was in just about every home during this period. This is truly a classic American fowling piece that that would be a nice addition to any Western Collection. The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The actions are excellent. The bores are bright and smooth. The barrels on this gun are unusually long at 37 3/8”. The stock shows use and remains solid. A great shotgun from the Gateway to the West, St. Louis, Missouri!
