Here we present an antique Charles Slotterbek Percussion Drilling in 12 Gauge and .36 caliber, made in San Franscisco, California in the mid-19th Century. This firearm is equipped with two 12-gauge smoothbore barrels, operated via traditional side locks, positioned above a rifled .36 caliber barrel that utilizes an underhammer lock integrated into the trigger plate for which he owned the patent. The upper rib is fitted with a rounded blade front sight and a notch rear sight, along with the inscription: “C. SLOTTERBEK MAKER. SAN FRANCISCO PATENTED MAY 13TH 1868.” A ramrod is stored beneath the left barrel and the rifled barrel. The back action locks and mounts are decorated with light scroll engraving. The walnut half-stock features checkering and provides a 14-1/2-inch length of pull.

Charles Slotterbek (also spelled Slotterbeck) was born in 1831 in the Kingdom of Württemberg in what is today Germany. He came from a line of gunmakers and, so, he and his brothers also apprenticed for the craft. He emigrated to the United States circa 1847 and worked with several famous gunmakers of the day, including James Golcher, Henry Deringer circa 1852—becoming his foreman—before moving from Philadelphia to San Francisco, where he worked for A.J. Plate, notorious for selling blatant copies of Henry Deringer’s namesake pistols, circa 1858. Charles’s brothers met up with him in California in 1859 and they went into business together, making some of those famous Deringer copies he learned to make under his old master, as well as very fine sporting guns such as this as well as target pistols. Charles would move to Lakeport in Lake County, CA circa 1872. He worked until 1886, when he was killed trying to de-prime a cartridge, which then exploded in his face.

A Drilling, which is German for triplet, normally consists of two matching smoothbore barrels and a rifled barrel. American drillings exist, but were quite rare, and it is no surprise that they would have been made by a skilled German immigrant. Slotterbek is considered by some to be one of the finest gunmakers in California’s history.

The overall condition is very good. Nicely engraved. The shotgun bores are smooth and remain bright. The rifle bore has sharp rifling and is bright. Smooth gray patina throughout with the barrels holding on to their original Damascus patterns. The stock is in very good condition and defined checkering on the wrist and forend. Small repair at the toe of the stock. Robust actions. Here is a hard to find and distinctive American drilling from the “Paris of the West.”
