WAGON BOX FIGHT Plaque on Antique PERKINS Percussion Shotgun 1867 Wyoming Red Cloud’s Band Versus the US Army Fort Kearny
Description: WAGON BOX FIGHT Plaque on Antique PERKINS Percussion Shotgun 1867 Wyoming Red Cloud’s Band Versus the US Army Fort Kearny Here we present an antique Percussion Shotgun by Perkins, a British gunmaker circa 1840. This is an interesting piece with a plaque that reads “RELIC OF THE/WAGON BOX FIGHT/WYOMING TERRITORY/AUGUST 1867.” The Wagon Box Fight was an engagement on August 2, 1867, in the general vicinity of Fort Phil Kearny, Wyoming, during Red Cloud's War. Red Cloud's War (also referred to as the Bozeman War or the Powder River War) was an armed conflict between the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Northern Arapaho Indians on one side and the United States in Wyoming and Montana territories from 1866 to 1868. The war was fought over control of the western Powder River Country in present north-central Wyoming. A party of 26 U.S. Army soldiers and 6 civilians were attacked by several hundred Lakota Sioux warriors. Although outnumbered, the soldiers were armed with newly supplied breech-loading Springfield Model 1866 rifles and Lever Action Henry rifles and had a defensive wall of wagon boxes to protect them. They held off the attackers for hours with very few casualties while causing heavy casualties to the Sioux warriors. While numerically superior to the US troops and civilians, Red Cloud’s band was not so well-armed: only some were armed with firearms (and there was little ammunition) while others had bows and more traditional weapons. It is clear that this shotgun spent much of its time out of doors. Both the wood and the steel are very dark with age and weathering. This single barrel shotgun was cut down during the period for ease of handling. It would have originally been approximately 40 inches but is now about 27 3/8”. No front sight was reinstalled. Furthermore, the rib underneath was removed. The brass plaque commemorating the Wagon Box Fight is a later addition for a display. This could very plausibly have been used by one of the Indians or one of the civilians present at the time, but more likely one of the Indian’s. Such a firearm would have been frequently used in trade, though it could just as easily have been taken. The action functions. The bore is smooth and dark as is the exterior. “FINE TWIST” can be read a top the barrel. “PERKINS” is engraved on the lock. The stock is dark and well-used. There is a damaged section atthe front of the forearm that is old and worn smooth. This is a very neat piece that exudes historical character and may very well have been there! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 27-3/8 inches. Caliber: 12 Gauge Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE.
