Light, lively, and well-balanced at just over six and a half pounds, it features 28-inch barrels choked improved cylinder and improved modified, making it exceptionally versatile for upland game and driven shooting. The boxlock action is fitted with double triggers, an automatic safety, and a smooth extractor system, all operating crisply and locking up tight. Bores are clear, the triggers are sharp, and the gun handles exactly as a proper English game gun should. The action retains roughly a quarter of its original case color, now mellowed with age, and is decorated with light, tasteful scroll engraving with “ARMY & NAVY STORES LTD.” proudly bannered on each side. The barrels retain nearly all of their reblued finish, and the straight-grip walnut stock and forend show strong checkering with only light handling marks consistent with careful use over many decades. What truly elevates this gun is its remarkable presentation and history. It remains housed in its original canvas case with leather corners and green felt interior, complete with period cleaning rod, accessories, nickel Army & Navy snap caps, and oil bottle. The case itself bears a label for the “Elder Dempster Lines – West Africa Service,” strongly suggesting that this shotgun traveled to Africa during the British colonial period, likely accompanying its owner on overseas service or sporting pursuits. Few sporting arms survive with such tangible links to imperial travel and adventure, and this detail adds significant character and collector appeal. Altogether, this is not only a very shootable and elegant English shotgun, but also a compelling historical artifact—an authentic Army & Navy gun with documented ties to West Africa, preserved with its original accoutrements and ready to be appreciated by the next steward of its long and storied life.
