Very light and very lively in the hand. A wonderful upland bird gun.

No date of manufacturer but the 3” came out in 1933 introduced by Winchester
“Shot and regulated for Army & Navy London” written on the barrel.

Stock and barrels are in great shape 98%+ condition. The trigger guard had been re-blackened and shows pitting that was corrected before re-blackening

The Army and Navy Co-operative Society Ltd were formed in 1871 by a group of army and navy officers. It was their intention to supply “articles of domestic consumption and general use to its members at the lowest numerative rates”. The first store opened on 15 February 1872 at Victoria Street, London. At the end of 1873 a gun department was established.
By the end of the century the Society was issuing an enormous annual illustrated price list, had introduced telephone ordering and had reduced mail order prices. In 1934 the company’s official name became the Army and Navy Store Ltd and in 1973 Army and Navy Stores was taken over by House of Fraser.
They retailed Guns for the British military during the period when “the sun never set on the British empire.” As such, they typically sold robust and reliable firearms as their soldiers needn’t have issues when half way around the world. The Army Navy name appeared on many grades and makers of guns as they had the guns made in the trade and marked with their name. W.C.Scott, Webley & Scott and Midland made most of their guns, though others (Holland & Holland, Purdy, Westley Richards) turned out guns for them.
