AYA 4/53 12-Bore
Description: For your consideration is an AYA No.4/53 12-bore BOXLOCK EJECTOR, serial no. 475272. The gun features 28in. nitro-proved, chopperlump barrels, 2 3/4in. chambers, choke-bored improved cylinder in the right tube and improved modifed in the left, automatic safety, removable striker discs, border engraving, and a 14 1/4in. stock. Weight is 6lb. 7oz. The gun retains most case colors and finish. Brass escutcheon on the stock. Trigger pulls have been regulated to 4lbs on the front trigger, and 5 lbs on the rear. The stock length of pull can easily be adjusted to suit a new owner by adding recoil pads of different thicknesses. Bores are bright and shiny. Also included is a lovely leather case, also in very good condition. The green felt lining inside the case is in very good condition, with little wear and no musty smell. This gun handles beautifully, and balances nicely directly over the hinge pin. This gun has just been completely mechanically overhauled by an English gunmaker, and has not been used since. Inside it is in like-new mechanical condition. All checkering on the grip, fore end and stock butt has been professionally re-cut, and the diamonds are sharp and crisp. Moreover, the gun has been demonstrated to be in proof. The stock is London-style oil finished, and the wood is in very good shape. It is ready and safe to shoot, and needs no work done to it. I have provided a copy of the work invoice, with personal and bank details blacked out, to confirm this. You can see the Norfolk, UK, address of the gunmaker in the top left corner of the invoice, and the gun is referenced by its serial number. I have also blacked out the details of another gun on the same invoice. I purchased this gun from the UK, and had it overhauled there by an indepedent gunmaker/gunsmith formerly affiliated with Holland and Holland. Essentially, the gun has been brought up to a like-new mechanical standard by a world-class craftsman. I purchase all my guns for re-sale from the UK because it is illegal to sell a gun there that is out of proof, so the buyer is protected by law from purchasing an unsafe or un-use-able shotgun. Moreover, they have world-class gunsmiths who perform outstanding work. As long as you continue to maintain this gun to its present standard by having it professionally cleaned and lubricated every year, it will continue to function without fault well into the future. There is nothing else which would need to be done. Everything has been inspected, and brought up to standard. The recent maintainence regime performed on this gun was as follows: 1) Completely dissassembled and all metal work boiled in a specially-formulated solution to deep clean and raise any rust down to the smallest crevice. 2) Every part was checked over for soundness, and then all parts were polished and lubricated. 3) The action was tightened, and barrel and fore-end fit were regulated. 4) Bores, chambers and chokes were lapped and polished. 5) Triggers pulls were verified to be at 4 and 5 lbs. 6) All checkering re-cut. As is the English custom, the gun was then fired 50 times by the gunsmith to verify that all work was done properly. The gun has not been fired since. AyA was founded in 1917 by Miguel Aguirre and Nicolas Aranzabal to make locks for the trade in Eibar, in the Basque region of northern Spain. By 1953 the company had expanded to become the largest gunmaker in Eibar with over 500 employees, not counting outworkers. From 1950 to 1965 the annual production was approximately 20,000 guns per year. Following economic downturns and a series of reorganizations, by 1988 AyA was reshaped as a gunmaking company by Imanuel Aranzabal, who focused on producing British-pattern side-by-sides in box- and side-lock configurations in smaller numbers and in higher quality only. The company now employs between 12 and 25 employees who preserve traditional methods to hand-make high-quality guns in side-by-side and over/under models that closely match the traditional British ideal of style and handling. Today, AyA guns represent some of the best value-for-quality firearms found anywhere in the world. The gun is a faithful Anson and Deeley boxlock with Southgate-patent ejectors, which are well timed, and perform nicely. Although this is AYA's most basic model, it is a very lively gun, with excellent handling characteristics, and features all the construction details found on their much more expensive guns, such as chopper-lump barrels, remove-able hinge pin, hand-struck barrels, disc-set strikers to limit gas escape and a heat-treated action with true case coloring. The only qualities that have been omitted are the superficial, such as highly-figured wood and lavish engraving. New, this gun sells for between $6,000 and $7,000.
