AyA (Aguirre y Aranzabal) of Eibar is one of the last surviving gunmakers in the famed Basque region of Spain. Over the last decade or so, other well-respected Spanish gunmakers have had to shut their doors with the main cause being the high cost of the hand fitting, hand engraving, and hand checkering of these fine guns. AyA has survived and flourished, building upon a long-standing reputation for making fine guns at affordable prices. The gun we show here, the AyA Model XXV, is modeled after the famed British gunmaker’s Churchill XXV, promoted by E.J. Churchill and his deadly efficiency with instinctive shooting that is still being taught today. Mr. Churchill found that short-barreled, centrally balanced shotguns that distributed weight equally between the shooter’s two hands were incredibly quick and responsive, lending themselves well to the instinctive point and shoot method he mastered so well. In today’s world, this method is translated practically to the fabled grouse and woodcock woods where thunderous grouse flushes leave the upland hunter only micro-seconds to locate the bird and shoot. The same can be said for the Southern Quail plantations with the little rockets Gentleman Bob. A fast gun can prove deadly in the grouse coverts or for fast flushing quail. This AyA, sn460468 built around 1975, is in beautiful factory condition and has every hallmark of the traditional English-style double: Purdey-type double underlugs, chopper-lump barrels, and delicate hand-engraved classic floral and scroll. This AyA Model XXV 20 Gauge weighs just 5lbs. 9oz. and balanced dead on the hinge pin will be a joy to carry over hill and dale next season. The barrels have the Churchill style rib, creating the visual illusion of length, 99% factory blue, excellent bores, 2 ¾” chambers, and are tight on the hinge pin and breech face and are choked Mod and Full. The action retains 98% factory original bone and charcoal case color, full coverage hand engraving, and perfect screws, all mechanics function precisely as they should. The furniture is well figured dark English walnut with superb wood to metal fit, excellent hand cut checkering and is finished with a VFI Purdey style leather pad. The specifications are shown in the table below, and we have priced this beautiful gun very affordably. If you want gunsmith work done, like opening chokes, we can have it done within days of your purchase. Don’t hesitate or she will be gone, and they do not come up very often. Thanks for looking!
