Baker Single Barrel Trap - RARE, HIGH FACTORY CONDITION, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Baker Gun Co., 1909, 12 Gauge, 7lbs. 2oz., Choke Full, LOP 14 3/8″, DAH 2 1/4″, DAC 1 1/2″ Serial Number: 86 The Baker Gun and Forging Company was founded by some of the most influential players of the early American sporting gun world, men you will know from later and more prolific gun makers. William Baker, Leroy H. Smith, and Lyman C. Smith formed an alliance in 1878 to make guns and that company would become “L.C. Smith, the Maker of the Baker Gun”. The Smith brothers built these guns until about 1888 when they sold the company to Hunter Arms Co. who built the L.C. Smith guns until selling to Marlin Arms in 1947. BIG NAMES INDEED. William Baker went on to join forces again with Leroy Smith and his brother-in-law George Livermore to start the Ithaca Gun Co. in Ithaca New York in 1883. L.C. Smith and Ithaca were the two biggest gunmakers in the American doublegun world. I provide this brief history because many shotgunners today are unaware of the Baker name in the gun industry. Early Baker guns were very high-quality and well-designed firearms that stand the test of time and are superb guns for your shooting pleasures today, over 140 years later. This gun is one of the earliest SINGLE BARREL TRAP GUNS PRODUCED, serial number 86 built in 1909. THE GUN IS IN FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION TO INCLUDE 99% BARREL BLUE, 85% VIVID CASE COLOR, 97% TRIGGER GUARD BLUE, 98% WOOD FINISH, PERFECT MIRROR BORE, PERFECT SCREWS AND WOOD TO METAL FIT, MECHANICALLY EXCELLENT IN ALL WAYS INCLUDING HAVING THE BARREL TIGHT AS NEW ON THE HINGE PIN AND BREECH FACE. This is a graceful, stunningly beautiful gun with well figured English walnut, superb checkering, a unique flared beavertail forend, Monte Carlo stock with cheek piece, and a leather faced Silvers pad (the Silvers pad replaced at some point in the past with a newer one). The barrel has a unique pyramid shape above the line of the forend wood, changing to round forward of the wood. The 30” vent rib barrel is choked Full. This is a VFI Certified gun having been stripped to the smallest part, Ultrasonic cleaned, each part scrubbed to the bare metal, all parts inspected for function and integrity, lubricated and reassembled, complete with a 90-day mechanical warranty, a $450 service in our shop. In Frank Connely’s definitive book, “THE AMERICAN SINGLE BARREL TRAP GUN” he details the Baker SBT, noting each one was made to order and no two were ever the same. Whoever ordered this gun knew what he was doing, as the beavertail forend fits the hand for a firm and steady swing and the cheek piece on the Monte Carlo stock helps to spread recoil across your cheek rather than the cheek bone. The locking mechanism is similar to the Ithaca Knick and is solid and fully capable of competitive shooting at the traps. THIS IS A RARE GUN AND A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO OWN A HIGH CONDITION PIECE OF AMERICAN GUN HISTORY AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE. See specifications below. Don’t miss out on this one, and thanks for looking!
