The Beretta S3 is one of the most historically significant over/under shotguns ever produced, serving as the direct predecessor to Beretta's legendary SO Series. Built on a true sidelock action, the S3 embodies the craftsmanship and mechanical excellence that would ultimately lead to the development of the famed SO4, SO5, SO6, SO9, and SO10 models. Early S-series Berettas are rarely encountered, particularly examples produced during the Second World War.
Manufactured in 1941, this shotgun is chambered in 12 gauge with 2.75-inch chambers and fitted with 28.25-inch barrels choked Improved Modified (.033") and Full (.042"). Weighing 7 pounds 8.9 ounces, it offers excellent balance for driven game, waterfowl, or sporting use. The ventilated matted rib is fitted with a silver front bead, providing a clean and traditional sighting plane.
The gun is built on a robust sidelock action featuring double triggers, ejectors, a non-automatic safety, cocking indicators, and a double locking cross-bolt, giving it the strength and reliability expected of Beretta's finest sporting guns. Mechanically, it remains in very good overall condition. The bores are clear, the action operates smoothly and locks up tight, the triggers are crisp, and the ejectors are strong and in time.
The coin-finished sidelock action is beautifully adorned with fine floral and scroll engraving covering nearly the entire receiver, complemented by richly blued steel barrels that provide an elegant contrast to the engraved action.
The shotgun is stocked with deluxe walnut featuring a straight grip and matching forend. Both retain sharp checkering, and the stock is fitted with a blank initial oval on the belly, preserving its classic European appearance.
Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the overall condition.
The Beretta S3 represents a pivotal chapter in Beretta history. Produced during World War II and serving as the foundation for the legendary SO Series, it offers collectors and shooters the opportunity to own one of the most important sidelock over/unders ever built. Elegant, mechanically refined, and historically significant, this is a truly exceptional early Beretta sporting shotgun.
