Superlative Unfired 20 Gauge Beretta 471 Silver Hawk Side-by-Side, New In The Case
Description:
For connoisseurs of high-grade side-by-side shotguns I offer for your consideration a superlative new-in-the-case 20-gauge Beretta 471 Silver Hawk game gun, without a doubt one of the finest “best grade” production-made game guns.
Historic Background of the Beretta 471 Silver Hawk
To commemorate their 470th anniversary in 1996 Beretta introduced the 470 Silver Hawk game gun, flawlessly incorporating the classic design elements of the vaunted Ansen & Deely-type side-by-side action and advanced functional and manufacturing innovations. The 470 Silver Hawk production spanned 1996 through 2002. In 2002 the 471 Silver Hawk, a further refinement of the 470 Silver Hawk, was introduced with production ending in 2006. With production spanning some ten years the 470-471 Silver Hawk series is the hallmark of what a production-made “best grade” game gun should be.
What constitutes or defines a “best grade” gun, whether production-made or bespoke? It is the collective view of those considered knowledgeable on the subject, past and present, such as the likes of Geoffrey Boothroyd, Don Zutz, Michael McIntosh, Nick Sisley, Terry Wieland, Steve Smith, Steven Hughes, and Michael Yardley, that a “best grade” exhibits five exceptional standards: design aesthetic, mechanics:(hereditary or newly created), quality of materials, craftsmanship, and finish. The Beretta 471 makes the grade on all five counts.

Technical and Aesthetic Features:
- Action: A timeless Anson & Deely-type box-lock type action machined from a solid block of nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Purdey-type two-bite underbolt locking incorporating Beretta patented self-compensating “progressive bottom locking bolts” precision machined using advanced EDM (Electronic Discharge Machining) technology insures a solid lock-up for generations. While the hammers are held by a cross-pin as in the iconic Anson & Deely design, the 471 improves on the basic design by mounting the entire trigger mechanisim on the trigger plate, similar to Beretta's tried and true over and under shotgun design. This requiires less "skeletonizing" of the interior of the action body resulting in a stronger action body than the tradional Anson and Deely design.
- Barrels: The 28-inch barrels are hammer-forged from “Excelsior” high tensil strength steel alloy and are so engraved on the barrels. Using the Beretta patented “Beretta Block” process the barrel tubes are laser-fused to a monobloc to create a solid one-piece assembly, eliminating the soldering, dovetailing, or pinning associated with typical monoblock or “chopper lump” barrel assembly. The barrel bores and chambers are hard chrome plated for corrosion resistance and ease of cleaning. Chambers are 3-inch/76mm which adds to the gun’s versatility.
- Barrel Rib: Concave “swamped” rib, tapered 3/8-inch at the breech to 7/32-inch at the muzzles.
- Chokes: Beretta Mobilchoke steel-shot proof screw-in choke tubes. See “Included with the purchase.”, below for more information.
- Butt Stock and Fore-end: The butt stock and fore-end are crafted from highly figured European walnut with a durable and easy to care for traditional hand-rubbed oil finish. Butt stock and fore-end are finely checkered in a diamond-point pattern, cut 20-lines per inch. The relaxed Prince of Wales-type pistol grip features the long-tang trigger guard as expected on a best grade gun.
- The excellently executed fore-end design blends the functional aspect of a conservatively-proportioned beavertail fore-end for the skeet or sporting clay shooter all the while retaining the aesthetic of a classic “splinter” game-gun fore-end. An Anson-type push-button release facilitates removal of the fore-end and is framed by an engraved end cap inlaid in the wood. A silver diamond-shaped escutcheon, expertly inletted into the fore-end and complimenting the diamond-point checkering pattern, conceals the fore-end iron attaching screw.
- Stock Dimensions: Drop at comb: 1 ½-inches; drop at heel: 2 3/8-inches, Length of pull: 14 3/8-inches (With Beretta Gunsmithing Department installed KICK-EEZ ¾-inch black Sporting Clays pad installed). Original equipped hard rubber pad (nominal 9/16-inch) is included with the gun.
- Engraving and Metal Finish: Details define a “best -grade” gun as is evident on this fine 471. The action body exhibits sculptured receiver sides, and scalloped and beaded fences tastefully adorned with hand-chased traditional scroll & leaf engraving. The top lever is highlighted with a gold-filled hawk’s head. The receiver, fore-end iron, trigger, trigger plate, trigger guard, top lever, are hard-chrome coin-finished for durability and corrosion resistance. The barrels are hot black oxide blued in the deep “London-black” manner. In the tradition of many bespoke “best-grade” guns, the action “water tables” and fore-end iron exposed surfaces are engine-turned jewel finished.
- Trigger Safety/Barrel Selector: Single selective trigger with barrel selector button integral with the automatic sliding safety. The automatic safety not only blocks the sear arms to stop them lifting out of the bents (sear notch on the hammers) but also disconnects the inertia selector block from the sear arms as well. In addition, interceptors are fitted to the back of the hammers to catch the hammers should they be jarred off if the gun is dropped.
- Ejector/Extractors: Your choice. Don’t want to litter the field with your fired hulls? This 471 can be easily set for manual cartridge case extraction or automatic cartridge case selective ejectors by means of a readily accessable rotary switch located in the fore-end iron (see photos).
- The 471 Silver Hawk offered for sale here is from my personal collection. It was my last Beretta firearm purchase following my tenure with Beretta USA. The boardroom at Beretta USA was a treasure trove of examples of the best of Beretta and that was where I was fell in love with the 471. The build of the 471 Silver Hawk, serial# S11257A, was completed on 08-07-2006 making it one of the last 471 Silver Hawks produced. This 471 Silver Hawk remains unfired since being proofed at the Italian national proof house, as new in the case.
- Weight: At 6 pounds, 15 ounces compliments the versitility of this 471 Silver Hawk, dampening the recoil when shooting a 100-round sporting clay course, multiple rounds of skeet, or hunting wily late-season pheasants with 3-inch Magnum loads. At the same time it exihbits the easy carrying and fast handling attributes of a fine quail, woodcock, ruffed grouse gun along with a smooth follow through.
Included with the purchase of the 471 are:
Choke Tubes: Five flush-mount
Beretta Mobilchoke tubes (SP=steel shot rated): SP-Full; SP-Improved Modified; SP-Modified; (2) SP-Cylinder; Beretta Special Skeet (a “spreader” choke, lead shot only, not SP rated). Five
Briley extended black oxide finished choke tubes: Modified; Light Modified; Improved Cylinder; (2) Skeet. Knurled grasping band speeds installation and removal. Choke constrictions are marked on band so there is no need to remove the choke to verify constriction.
