Browning D4
Description:
Manufactured in 1976 as a true numbered pair, these finely embellished FN shotguns feature blued Special Steel barrels with single bead sights on matted flat vent ribs, each rib gold marked “1” or “2” at the breech. Both guns are chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells with automatic ejectors, standard factory markings, import marks on the flats, and “**-”/“*-” choke markings for improved cylinder/improved modified.
The coin finished actions are engraved in the desirable “D4” pattern, with scrollwork surrounding detailed game scenes: setters flushing a pheasant on the left, pointers flushing a mallard on the right, setter busts on the underside, and a woodcock on the triggerguard. The toplevers are gold inlaid “1” and “2” respectively. Gun no. 1 is signed “J. PIROTTE” for FN engraver Jeannine Pirotte, while gun no. 2 is signed “M. BODSON” for FN engraver Mario Bodson. Both guns are fitted with single triggers and tang mounted automatic safety/selectors with gold inlaid “S,” “O,” and “U” indicators.
The pair is stocked in beautifully figured walnut with multi-point checkered Schnabel tip forends, engraved forend irons, and straight grip perch belly style buttstocks with teardrop carved drop points, “T.W.” gold inscription ovals, and Kick-Eez recoil pads. The set is housed in a fitted wood and leather takedown motor case with matching “T.W.” initials on both the case and canvas cover. Measurements: bore diameter .726/.725 inches; choke constriction .011/.020 inches; minimum wall thickness .035/.033 inches; drop at comb 1 3/8 inches; drop at heel 1 9/16 inches; length of pull 14 1/2 inches; cast-off; weight 6 lbs. 14 oz.
