Browning Superposed 20 Gauge – P3S PRESENTATION GRADE SUPERLIGHT, vintage firearms inc
Description: General Specs: Browning, Year 1977, 20 Gauge, 5lbs 12oz, Chokes IC/M, LOP 14 3/16", DAH 2 5/16", DAC 1 7/16" Serial Number: P23RR1460 The Browning Superposed is one of the finest over/under shotguns in history and one of John Browning’s most brilliant designs. Produced in plain-jane field grades to the most elaborately engraved and finely stocked shotguns ever seen, production of the Browning Superposed was done in Belgium, running strong from 1931 through 1977 when traditional production stopped. In 1977 Browning introduced the Presentation Series of their beloved Superposed which lasted until 1984 and the end of the Superposed as a production gun. The Presentation Series consisted of grades P-1 through P-4, with the first two grades engraved using an acid etching process and no hand engraving. The P-3 Presentation Grade had game scene vignettes that were hand engraved, with the balance of the receiver acid etched. However, there were about 15 of the first year P-3 Grade guns that were entirely hand engraved and signed by the engraver. THE GUN WE HAVE HERE, SERIAL NUMBER P23RR1460 MADE IN 1977, IS ONE OF THOSE 15 GUNS ENTIRELY ENGRAVED BY HAND, SIGNED BY JOSE BAERTEN, FN’S CHIEF ENGRAVER AT THAT TIME. This is a very desirable, totally hand engraved P3S Presentation Grade Superposed. Even better it is one of the highly sought-after Superlight models with the English stock, Schnabel forend, and rounded action that weighs in at 5 3/4lbs., a full ½ pound lighter than the “Lightning” model, an upland gun extraordinaire! THEY ONLY MADE 85 SUPERLIGHT GUNS IN P3 GRADE (121 total P3 20ga. guns in all configurations), AND ONLY A FEW THAT WERE COMPLETELY HAND ENGRAVED…THIS IS A VERY RARE BROWNING! What a gorgeous Superposed, with deep cut scroll borders, gold wire inlays creating game scene vignettes with 5 large raised, solid gold inlays that are richly detailed and life-like. The wood is highly figured with flame feather crotch throughout and fiddleback that changes as you move the stock in the light…just gotta love it! The 26 ½” barrels are choked IC/M retaining 99% factory blue and mirror bores, barrels tight on the hinge pin and breech face with the top lever to the right of center. The mechanics are excellent throughout, the action still retains 95% factory blue with just a bit of carry wear on the rounded edges…the gun was used little and was well cared for over the last 44 years. There are numerous light handling marks in the wood, nothing deep or through the finish. We can restore the wood to perfection here in our shop within 12 weeks of purchase if you so choose, a $650 process. The high-grade Browning Superposed guns are highly prized, collectible, investment grade guns that are purpose-built for pursuing upland game or crushing clays on your favorite course. We have priced this gun so that the new owner will have instant equity, so don’t hesitate on this one. I doubt there will ever be a chance to own such a gun again. Thanks for looking!
